Presented by Chevron
steam education meets football
49ers EDU presented by Chevron leverages the game of football and Levi’s Stadium as a platform to expose students to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) concepts and careers. Using the lens of football and a state of the art facility at Levi’s® Stadium helps us create excitement and engagement around these critical learning concepts. To date, the program has impacted over 300,000 Bay Area youth.
PIVOTING DURING THE PANDEMIC
Recognizing that inspiring youth to engage in STEAM learning was one of our greatest contributions, we needed to figure out a way to pivot our in-person programs and continue to serve Bay Area Youth through the trials and tribulations of distance learning. This meant not only putting our content online, but ensuring that our content was accessible, available and valuable for all who sought it. To that end, directed our efforts towards the following:
49ers EDU Digital Playbook
Unable to deliver in-person field trip experiences, 49ers EDU digitized their beloved Learning Playbook. The 49ers EDU Digital Playbook is now an interactive PDF that teaches students about the game of football through the lens of STEAM. This format also lets teachers download a flat PDF - creating further opportunities for use in digital classrooms or print once students are back in the classroom.
49ers EDU Digital Playbook Review
As additional support to teachers, 49ers EDU created short videos reviewing the subjects found on the pages of the Digital Playbook. These videos bring the content to life and serve as asynchronous learning materials teachers can use or a fan can enjoy in their leisure time.
49ers EDU Playbook Patrol presented by CalHOPE
In partnership with CalHOPE, 49ers EDU distributed over 10,000 49ers EDU Learning Playbooks across the nine Bay Area counties. Bringing physical resources into the hands of our community’s youth in a digital era, 49ers EDU distributed playbooks through contactless pick-up sites at schools, community service programs, and libraries.
VIRTUAL LESSON SERIES
Keeping students motivated through a whole year of distance learning is tough. In hopes of exciting students about learning and taking a small load off of teachers, 49ers EDU started teaching live virtual lessons in K-8 classrooms. In a 45-minute virtual session, teachers can register to participate in one of three lessons: Career Connections, Art and Math, or Environmental Sustainability.
Follow Your Bliss Award (Virtual)
Named by 49ers Consultant and Civil Rights Activist Dr. Edwards, this award -presented by the Extra Yard for Teachers and Micron- recognizes five nominees that have led with passion and purpose with a $5,000 grant to use for their school community, a one-on-one session with Dr. Edwards, and a virtual celebration.
Teacher Professional Development
Educators hungry to bring these inspiring techniques back to their own classrooms motivated us to launch our Teacher Professional Development Series. Traditionally hosted at the stadium, this event went virtual in 2020. During the sessions teachers are invited to choose from sessions on Project-Based Learning, STEAM Integration, and the Engineering Design Process.
EDUCATION LEGACY PARTNER PROGRAMS
49ers stem leadership institute
The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (SLI) was founded in 2013 in partnership with Chevron, the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, and the Santa Clara Unified School District to provide educational opportunities for students interested in pursuing STEM related careers. Overcoming the limitations of distance learning, SLI provided kits and materials for guided hands-on learning at home, virtual college and career panels, and leadership opportunities for all students.
CITY YEAR
SAN JOSE/
silicon Valley
For 14 years running, the 49ers Foundation has partnered with City Year San Jose and local AmeriCorps volunteers to ensure that more of our underserved students graduate from high school by helping them achieve 10th grade readiness in English/Language Arts and Math. City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley uses near-peer mentors in the area’s most underserved schools to boost graduation rates and address root issues to motivate students to stay in school and move forward.
THE
49ers
ACADEMY
Founded in 1996, the 49ers Academy empowers students (6th-12th grade) in East Palo Alto, a historically under-resourced community, to succeed in school and close the achievement gap. The 49ers Academy academic programs and needs-based services are integrated into the school day and provide a comprehensive community of support—a system of care management that addresses students’ dynamic, holistic needs. Every day is aimed at keeping youth on track to graduate high school and reach their full potential.
PRE-COVID PROGRAMS
(and the type of work we hope to do again, in person, real soon.)
